West Melbourne mom charged with 'neglect death' of newborn twins

A central Florida mother is under arrest after her two infants died under what authorities call "suspicious circumstances" over the weekend.

One of the babies was dead when police arrived at the house on Sunday and the other was pronounced dead at hospital, police said.

"There are suspicious circumstances involved", the release stated, though police did not elaborate.

"It is something that is very serious". We will methodically investigate this to try to get the answers that the children here deserve, ' Richard Cordeau, captain of the West Melbourne Police Department, told WFTV.

"The fact that there are two deceased infants-that's not normal", Cordeau said. West Melbourne Police announced she was charged with child neglect and tampering with evidence. 'There could be a reasonable explanation for this and that's part of the investigation, but there could not be a reasonable explanation'.

Thomas remains in custody in lieu of $30,000 bond, jail records show.

The children were found unresponsive in the West Melbourne, Florida, home which Thomas lived in with her mother and two older children.

The police department and Department of Children and Families, which is investigating the case, have not had any previous contact with Thomas.
