State police respond to 'ongoing situation' at SC prison

The incident at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C., "involved multiple inmate on inmate altercations in three housing units", the Department of Corrections said.

Logan says it appears most of the seven were killed by stabbing or slashing.

Deadly prison riots are relatively rare in the US. The seven inmates were killed, and at least 17 prisoners wounded, in a riot at the Lee Correctional Institution.

Stirling said officials believe the riot was "all about territory, all about contraband" at the prison, which houses some of the state's worst and longest-serving offenders.

In an update late Monday morning, the Department of Corrections identified the men who had been killed: Eddie Casey Jay Gaskins, Joshua Svwin Jenkins, Cornelius Quantral McClary, Michael Milledge, Damonte Marquez Rivera, Corey Scott and Raymond Angelo Scott.

He said most of the inmates are affiliated with gangs. Lee County Coroner Larry Logan said he arrived to a chaotic scene of fighting all over the prison.

"The [corrections officers] never even attempted to render aid, nor quell the disturbance", he said.

The state has about 5000 prison employees in 22 institutions, but "security staff numbers continue to lag behind the authorised strength", the department's fiscal 2017 Accountability Report said, without giving numbers. They youngest was 28 years old while the oldest was 44.

Martin said staff shortages could have been a contributing factor in the riot.

In 1993, nine inmates and a corrections officer were killed in the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Lucasville, Ohio. "It's not a surprise when wer have violent events take place inside the prison, any prison in the country", McMaster said.

Last month, inmates in one part of the prison allegedly took an officer hostage and controlled one side of a dormitory, part of a troubled history that has saw one inmate kill another in February and two officers stabbed in 2015.

As of April 16 at midnight, the SCDC website accounts for 1,266 inmates at Lee Correctional Institution.

The riot was the latest violence in the SC prisons system, where at least 13 other inmates have been killed by fellow prisoners since the start of 2017.
