Microsoft Garage launches Photos Companion app for Android and iOS

Considering that Windows 10 Mobile is now in maintenance mode, it was very surprising to see such a big update for the Photos app last week. Today, Microsoft has officially released the app on both platforms.

Developed as a Microsoft Garage project, the Photos Companion app uses Wi-Fi connectivity on your phone and PC to establish a connection to transfer photos and videos from one device to another.

Last week, Fast Ring Insiders discovered a brand new version of the Photos app for mobile, with a layout that looked very similar to the PC version.

The previous update made the Photos app nearly a truly universal app, though some advanced features such as Story Remix were missing on mobile. If you're not seeing the "import from mobile over Wi-Fi" option in the Photos app for Windows 10, you might need to enable the "show additional preview features" option in the settings section of the Photos app for Windows 10. You then scan a QR code to set up the connection between devices, select the photos and videos you want to transfer, and they'll be on their way. Keep in mind you'll have to have Photos version 2018.18011.13110.0 or later installed on your PC.

You can download the Photos Companion app for iOS or Android right now.
