German claim about Iran role in Syria-Israel tensions baseless

Qasemi said the allegations about Iran's role in the recent downing of an Israeli fighter by Syria were "baseless". "This is while the facts point to Iran's honest efforts to de-escalate tension in Syria, at the same time as the USA government tries to prevent any such efforts", Iran's mission to the United Nations said in statement on Wednesday. "Israel rightly took action to defend itself".

Tensions between the two countries have skyrocketed since an Israeli F-16 jet was shot down over Syria, reportedly by Iranian-led forces.

Qassemi was reacting to recent comments by the German government's spokesperson, Steffen Seibert, who voiced "concerns" about Iran's "military engagement" in the region and claimed such a role "is leading to a risky escalation" in the conflict gripping Syria.

Hailey tied the incident to an attack by pro-Syrian regime forces on US-backed coalition forces last week, accusing "actors", likely a veiled reference to Iran, of engaging in "a unsafe game of pushing boundaries, instead of behaving responsibly and committing to peace".

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, reaffirmed Haley's remarks on Twitter, urging the global community to ensure Iran doesn't entrench itself in Syria.

"I think this again illustrates why Iran's presence in Syria is only destabilizing to the region". In turn, Syrian anti-aircraft managed to shoot down an Israeli aircraft that crashed in Northern Israel.

Israel then launched a massive attack on 122 Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria from which all its planes returned unscathed.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia traded accusations with Haley about responsibility for blocking the path to peace.

The road to muzzling Iran's belligerence in Syria could go through Moscow, a tack the US and Israel should think hard about taking.
