Cardinals announce Larry Fitzgerald will return to Arizona for 15th season

- Larry Fitzgerald will return to the Arizona Cardinals for the 2018 season.

Wilks said Fitzgerald called him Wednesday night to inform the first-year coach he is committed to the Cardinals despite the team having a hole at the quarterback position.

Fitzgerald is third in National Football League history in career receptions and receiving yards, and he's No. 1 in both categories among receivers who have only played for one National Football League team.

The franchise has already seen its head coach retire, a subsequent coaching search that landed Steve Wilks and the retirement of its quarterback Carson Palmer.

"I'm extremely excited", Wilks said, via the team website.

Palmer announced his retirement following a 15-year career in January and former coach Bruce Arians called it quits after five seasons with the Cardinals. Despite the fact he will turn 35 on August 31, Fitzgerald has enjoyed three of his best seasons the past three years. Fitzgerald caught 30 passes for 546 yards and seven touchdowns in Arizona's improbable march to Super Bowl XLIII.

Jerry Rice, in first place in both categories, is likely unreachable in both catches (1,549) and yards (22,895). It was his third straight season of 100 and 1,000.

While he signed an extension through 2018 in November, he couldn't commit to playing out the deal. We know that's in Fitzgerald's wheelhouse, as his wildly productive 2015-17 campaigns were preceded by three years with less than 1,000 receiving yards, when he was still adjusting to his new role.
