This star could leave if Alexis Sanchez joins Manchester United

Manchester United are confident of attracting Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez although a deal is not imminent, says SSN reporter James Cooper.

Man City were willing to pay £60m for a Sanchez back in the summer when he had less than a year left on his contract, which makes their reluctance to make a £30m bid - the amount Arsenal want - when he has six months left makes very little sense indeed.

However, the move by Jose Mourinho to land the wantaway forward has seen them leapfrog the league leaders in the race for his signature, with City thought to be unwilling to match Arsenal's £35m asking price.

He has been at Arsenal since 2014.

There's a growing feeling amongst football fans and the media that Alexis Sanchez is about to join Manchester United from Arsenal.

There was also a feeling within Old Trafford that Arsenal, and manager Arsene Wenger, would not sanction a sale to United and Mourinho due to the embarrassment caused by Robin van Persie's success in a United shirt following his move there in 2012 and, perhaps more significantly, the long-running tension between Mourinho and Wenger.

Manchester City and Liverpool are also in the race for Sanchez but United have the upper hand because they're prepared to meet Arsenal's demands. You want to focus on the players who are on the pitch and can do well for the club. United boss Jose Mourinho - as of recent - has been plotting to intercept the Sanchez move, as the issue of whether he signs in January or in the summer is yet to be determined.

Then along came Manchester United, who were willing to better City's offer with a £35 million bid of their own or a part exchange involving Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
