Democrats to choose next California Senate leader in January

Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, after her housing measure was approved by the state Assembly on September 14, 2017, in Sacramento, Calif.

Interestingly, in the wake of sexual harassment issues among legislators continuing to make the national headlines the California Senate has announced it will be electing its first female President Pro Tempore. Democrats are planning for it to be Senator Toni Atkins of San Diego, a former Assembly speaker.

Los Angeles Democrat Kevin de Leon says he will step aside as California's top Senate leader sometime next year after his successor is chosen in January. Dianne Feinstein, a fellow Democrat. "I have every confidence she will lead America's most accomplished legislative chamber to even greater heights and build on our extraordinary progress".

"Today, I am humbled by the trust my colleagues have placed in me, and I intend to earn that trust every day by working tirelessly and inclusively to keep California a place of opportunity for everyone", Atkins said in a statement in which she also praised De León.

If De León's statement holds true, it will be the second time that Atkins, 55, of South Park, has been the leader of one of the chambers in Sacramento. She was elected to the Assembly in 2010 and became speaker in 2014.
