Toyota, Mazda Narrow Down Locations for Shared Plant

According to news Agency Reuters, which cites its own sources in the company Toyota, the new plant of the joint venture Toyota-Mazda will be built in Alabama, or in the territory of North Carolina.

Tennessee, Texas, and SC were among the more than dozen states linked to the factory.

A Toyota spokesman declined to comment.

The Randolph County Planning Board voted in the affirmative Tuesday night on a rezoning request that would add 370 acres to the 1,500-acre mega-site south of Greensboro.

Unsurprisingly, the price to land a new automotive plant is steep.

"I think if it doesn't come, we've got a prime site, probably one of the best sites in North Carolina, that can attract an industry of some sort", said Liberty Mayor Filmore York. There are two megasites in Chatham County, one in Edgecombe County and one on the Guilford-Randolph counties border.

The shared facility is expected to open in 2021.

The auto companies announced earlier this year that they were searching for a place to establish a plant that would manufacture 300,000 vehicles a year.

Though Detroit is known as the Motor City, that designation doesn't appear to be enough to entice Toyota and Mazda to build its new jointly owned plant in MI.

It was believed following the initial announcement Toyota would build the plant relatively close to its Mississippi Corolla plant, and the company already makes engines at its Alabama manufacturing plant in Huntsville.
