Dave Righetti out as Giants' pitching coach

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Dave Eiland has interviewed for the Giants' pitching coach job.

The Giants are expected to make an announcement on the coaching staff on Saturday.

But the Giants are moving Righetti and others as the team significantly overhauls a coaching staff under manager Bruce Bochy that also includes reassignments of Ron Wotus and Hensley Meulens, FanRag Sports has learned.

Not all of it was Righetti's fault - hardly at all. Madison Bumgarner was shelved after sustaining a serious shoulder injury in a dirt bike accident, Johnny Cueto couldn't shake a cluster of blisters on his right hand and Mark Melancon found it hard to justify a $62 million paycheck after pitching through an arm injury to four blown losses/saves and a 4.50 ERA.

In 2018, the team's rotation will look different, too, as longtime starter Matt Cain will not return to the team; he is retiring. It would be a lot for any pitching coach to stay on top of, and given the team's rapid descent from 2016 postseason contenders to last-place finishers in 2017, it's not surprising that Evans felt the need to switch things up.
