Grandfather finds missing $24m lottery ticket in old shirt after last-minute reminder

The 68-year-old retired security guard explained how watching a news report about the much-publicised unclaimed jackpot reminded him to search for the ticket. Much to his surprise, he'd been sitting on $24 million for almost a year.

It was only once the one-year deadline approached and local news outlets started to report that no one had claimed the prize money, that the 68-year-old made a decision to take a look at the shirt pocket where he accumulated old, unchecked tickets, reports Park Slope Patch.

The New York Lottery discharged his name Wednesday after a survey was finished. "I stood there for a minute thinking, 'Do I see what I think I see?' I had to stick my head out the window and breathe in some fresh air. I really had to convince myself this was real".

"I always told myself, 'I'll check them when I have the time, '" he said.

He got the payout more than 26 years. Once thing calm down, he says he'll have a family discussion about the money.
