Cubs put Contreras on DL

Chicago Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras is reportedly expected back by September after suffering a hamstring injury on Wednesday in San Francisco. The Cubs feared the worst, but the diagnosis at least leaves open the possibility that the 25-year-old will return before the end of the regular season.

"I'm not going to rush anything", Contreras said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm going to make sure when I get back I get back 100 percent".

CHICAGO, IL - JULY 23: Willson Contreras #40 of the Chicago Cubs is congratulated in the dugout after hitting a two-run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the sixth inning at Wrigley Field on July 23, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois. Overall this season, he is hitting.274 with 20 doubles, 21 home runs and 70 RBI in 102 games.

On Friday, Contreras said he felt bad he couldn't be out there to support the team.

The Cubs say it's a moderate strain. They've lost six of their last nine games, and now have a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks who are one of the best home teams in all of baseball.

"Obviously it's hard not to have his name in the lineup tonight, with all the wonderful things he's done all year, especially since the All-Star break", Cubs manager Joe Maddon said before Friday's game.
