Russian Jet Flies Within Feet of US Plane Over Baltic Sea

The U.S. has conducted three airstrikes over the past month against those forces.

A US military official says a Russian fighter jet flew within several feet of a USA reconnaissance plane in what the USA says was an unsafe maneuver over the Baltic Sea.

A defense official says the drone was approaching a military camp near the Syria-Jordan border.

On Monday, Russia warned that US aircraft operating in specific regions in Syria would be considered "air targets" for its forces after a US Navy jet shot down a pro-regime fighter jet.

The US-led worldwide coalition later confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the armed drone was downed "after it displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces" that "were manning an established combat outpost to the northeast of At Tanf where they are training and advising partner ground forces in the fight against ISIS". The official says the drone was a Shaheed 129 and appeared to have been operated by "pro-regime" forces.

The armed drone, which was made in Iran, was determined to be a threat, and after it "continued to advance on the coalition position without diverting its course, it was shot down", the statement added.

The Australian Defense Force's name for its effort to fight ISIS is Operation OKRA.

Russia scrambled a Su-27 fighter to intercept a target over neutral Baltic waters, the target turned out to be United States reconnaissance aircraft Boeing RC-135, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Hernandez said the close encounter was unprovoked by the USA aircraft and that it wasn't clear if there was any communication between the aircraft. War is politics by other means, and when it starts it takes on a life of its own.
