Celtics, 76ers finalize deal to swap top picks

"They're getting the player they want", said Ainge, the Celtics' president of basketball operations.

"We think there's a really good chance the player we'll take at three is the same player we would have taken at one", Ainge said.

But if that Lakers pick doesn't fall between No. 2 and No. 5 in the 2018 draft, Philadelphia will instead send a 2019 first-rounder to Boston that it acquired from the Sacramento Kings. There would be one exception to that: if either pick is No. 1 overall, the Celtics will get the other one. The Celtics had Duke's Jayson Tatum in for a workout on Monday and hope to have Kansas' Josh Jackson in on Tuesday.

For now, Boston has seven first-round selections in the next three years. They also do not need a point guard, unlike the 76ers, who are very high on Fultz.

While the pair of top picks getting swapped was the biggest news of the weekend for National Basketball Association fans, an under-the-radar story broke, claiming George informed the Indiana Pacers he would be leaving the team for free agency after the completion of next season with the hopes of signing on with his hometown Los Angeles Lakers.

Regardless of what moves they eventually decide to make, the trade between Boston and Philly will certainly solidify a long-standing rivalry to return back to its competitive days.

Which pick the Celtics will receive in 2018 or 2019 is a bit complicated. "History suggests that No. 1 has the greatest odds of producing franchise-level talent and we are confident that this year's draft class has that very potential".

"You want well-rounded players that fit what you're doing", Colangelo said.

Less than two weeks removed from the NBA finals, the association is already grabbing headlines as it gears up for the offseason. If he's a superstar, it'd be almost impossible for Boston to recoup enough value from the lower draft picks it received. If the Lakers hold a pick between No. 2 and No. 5 next season, Boston now gets that one as well.

In his only season with Washington, Fultz averaged 23.2 points and 5.9 assists.

"On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Griff for his leadership and many contributions during his time here, including most recently, his role in the franchise's first NBA Championship", Gilbert said in a statement.

Fultz, barring something shocking, will join a core in Philadelphia that includes Simmons, Jahlil Okafor and 2017 Rookie of the Year finalists Joel Embiid and Dario Saric.

Philadelphia will hold the No. 1 pick for the second straight year, and worked Fultz out on Saturday night as talks with the Celtics got to the final stages.

All indications are the 76ers will select Fultz, who grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and played his freshman season at the University of Washington.
