Veterans take off on first area honor flight of the year

Stars and Stripes Honor Flights are accompanied by volunteers, medical personnel and a personal guardian for each veteran who are there to meet all the travelers' needs.

Two local military veterans will get the VIP treatment with an Honor Flight to Washington, DC later this month.

The nonprofit organization was created to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices by transporting our heroes to Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials.

Veterans began reporting to the Eastern Iowa Airport at 5:00 this morning and will return to Cedar Rapids around 10:15 tonight. "This is the mission of Honor Flight Tri-State: to make that dream come true for as many veterans as possible".

The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight has kicked off their 2017 flight season with EIHF Flight #27.
