Joel Matip: 'A club like Liverpool belongs in the Champions League'

If rumors of Liverpool's interest in Southampton's Virgil van Dijk are true, Liverpool may even be able to compete with those big names if they do, in fact, make it into the Champions League.

Liverpool are now 3rd in the Premier League, 6 points ahead of Manchester United, and 9 points ahead of Arsenal.

The Reds are now among the contenders to secure a place in Europe's elite club competition for next season as Jurgen Klopp looks to steer Liverpool to a top-four finish in his first full campaign in charge at Anfield.

Joël Matip has impressed in his first season at Liverpool. ' brilliant' LFC defender Joel Matip hopes so, and with only five games remaining of the season, the Reds are close to getting back into Europe's elite competition.

"But now we are in this position, we want to try and keep it and get more and more". Big history, big club. It is such a great club with this history.

"I want to play in the Champions League because then you play against the biggest teams and the biggest players and everybody will enjoy this".

Asked about why he picked Liverpool to be his new club, it's no surprise that it was Klopp who was the real sweetener.

"In Germany everybody knows him", he said.

Looking ahead to Sunday's trip to the Hawthorns, though, Matip has predicted another tough examination of Liverpool's top-four credentials, especially against a side with the Baggies' characteristics.

"They know how to act, but it will be a tough, hard fight".

"I am not afraid, I will not hide against these players".
