The Overland Park Fire Department says the fire started in a portion of the four-story apartment complex that was under construction. The fire reached eight alarms by 6 p.m.

Within minutes, one building had burned to the ground as flames engulfed a second structure in the development, according to local television station KMBC.

Firefighters are battling a massive fire at an apartment complex in Overland Park.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

"As bad as the embers blowing was the direct heat", Rhodes said. All the fire departments are sending people to help us.

"(It's a) rapidly-growing fire, probably a lot of fuel in there with all the construction material and whatnot", Rhodes said at a news conference. Wind is strong today. He said crews would continue to work to get a handle on the fires and it would likely be daybreak before they would get a look at the full extent of the damage and even begin to explore a possible cause.

41 Action News spoke with an Overland Park father who saw the fire on the news.

Multiple homes near the apartments were also on fire.
