Raiders sign QB EJ Manuel — NFL free agency

The former first-round pick officially signed a deal with the Oakland Raiders on Monday. The Raiders apparently see enough value here to consider him a viable backup beyond starter Derek Carr.

The acquisition of Manuel likely means the end of quarterback Matt McGloin whose contract expired at the end of the 2016 season.

The 6-foot-5, 237-pound Manuel saw his most extensive action during his rookie campaign, making 10 starts and throwing for 1,972 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Every time the Bills gave Manuel the starting quarterback job, he somehow managed to lose it.

During his four years with Buffalo, he started in a total of 17 games. In 2014, the Bills made a decision to pull Manuel after just four games in favor of Kyle Orton. Manuel then spent the following two seasons serving as Tyrod Taylor's backup. Manuel has thrown for 3,502 passing yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for four scores in his career.

EJ Manuel is headed for Oakland. He was originally selected by the franchise in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Florida State.
