Quick Read: Petoskey's JC Penney not among stores on closing list

Penney noted that most stores affected by the closing plans will begin the process in mid-April, and that most will shut down in June.

The closest stores to D.C. that will close are in Easton, Maryland; Roanoke, Virginia; and in Christiansburg, Virginia, south of Roanoke, according to the list released by J.C. Penney.

The retail chain is closing four other OR stores and a total of 138 nationally.

Between Macy's, Sears and Kmart all closing down stores, almost 300 department stores will close down nationwide, CNBC reported.

A spokesman said the company will “go to great lengths” to relocate “esteemed leaders.” If possible, it will help employees identify other jobs in nearby J.C. Penney stores, he said. The company has $4.3 billion debt that it hopes to erase.

Also in Florida, J.C. Penney will close its Lakeland Logistics Center.

Nine stores will close in Texas, the most of any state. That company has filed for bankruptcy and is closing a total of 552 stores.

J.C. Penney is one of several big box retailers closing underperforming stores this year.

When the company announced February 24 it would close 130-140 stores, it had more than 1,000 locations in the USA and Puerto Rico.
