Bellator Adds Fedor Emelianenko-Matt Mitrione To Bellator 180

They were going to serve as the main event of Bellator 172 last month.

A heavyweight matchup between Russian icon Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione has been re-booked to Bellator 180 on June 24 in NY. In the featured attraction will be Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva on pay-per-view.

Mitrione, a defensive tackle who played nine games with the Giants in 2002, had to pull out hours before the previously scheduled February 18 fight with Fedor because of kidney stones.

It wasn't meant to be as Mitrione was pulled from the bout due to kidney stones.

It was initially reported that Mitrione would remain the man to welcome Emelianenko to the Bellator brand, but it seems those plans have now changed. Prior to this controversy-ridden fight, he pounded out an outmatched Jaideep Singh in his return from a long hiatus.

Mitrione, meanwhile, sits at 11-5 in sum. Despite rumors floating around that Bellator was moving away from Mitrione as "The Last Emperor's" next opponent, the NY Post has confirmed the bout is back on. He has gone 2-o in the Bellator cage since joining the organization in early 2016, defeating Carl Seumanutafa in his debut, and more recently, Oli Thompson. The first was Bellator 120, which went down in 2014, and was headlined by a light heavyweight scrap between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal. On a five-match winning streak of his own, he had previously undergone a three-fight losing streak toward the end of his run with Strikeforce, which prompted his retirement. Sound off, PENN Nation!
